What is a Dental Crown & When is it Needed?

A dental crown is also known as a tooth-shaped “crown” that is placed over a tooth to cover it and restore its shape, size, strength, and improve its appearance. A dental crown is cemented into place so that it fully encloses the entire visible portion of the tooth right at and above the gum line. A dental crown may be needed in the following situations:

  • To restore a broken tooth or a tooth that has been severely worn down
  • To cover and support a tooth with a large filling when there isn’t a lot of tooth left
  • To reinforce or protect a tooth, that is weakened by decay, from breaking or to hold together parts of a cracked tooth.
  • To hold a dental bridge in place
  • To cover misshaped or severely discolored teeth
  • To cover a dental implant
  • To make a cosmetic modification

For young children, a stainless steel dental crown may be used on primary (baby) teeth in order to:

  • Save a tooth that has been so damaged by decay that it can’t support a filling
  • Protect the teeth of a child at high risk for tooth decay, especially when a child has difficulty keeping up with daily oral hygiene, due to age, behavior, or medical history.

What Types of Dental Crowns are Available?

Permanent crowns may be crafted using a number of different materials, such as stainless steel, all-metal (such as gold or another alloy), porcelain-fused-to-metal, all resin, or all ceramic. The doctor will help you decide which material is best for you.
